Solar panel shading is a major issue on many boats. Shading can reduce a standard panel performance by over 60%. Custom Marine Products has developed a series of semi-flexible shade tolerant solar panels that have superior performance when partially shaded by boat equipment or nearby objects. These solar panels have high performance SunPower Maxeon cells. The diagram to the left illustrates how these amazing panels work. The junction box is mounted in the center or the edge of the panel enabling the panel to have four quadrants of solar cells linked in series and isolated with diodes. If one or two quadrants are shaded, the other quadrants perform at normal output. The result is a panel that will provide up to three times the output of a standard panel when shaded. These shade tolerant panels are ideal for bimini and dodger mounting where there is boom, mast and instrument pole shading. Patent pending

These panel provide excellent performance when partially shaded by the boom, mast and equipment. They use the highest efficiency SunPower solar cells available. They are split into four quadrants that all operate independently so if one quadrant is shaded the other three have full power output. They put out 23 volts Voc and measure 21.3x42.1. They have the highest efficiency available SunPower solar cells at 24.4% efficient allowing maximum power per square inch available. Mounting grommets, MC4 connectors and blocking diodes are included. They come with two 3 foot pigtails. These panel provide excellent performance when shaded by the boom, mast and equipment poles. They are split into four quadrants that all operate independently so if one quadrant is shaded the other three have full power output. They measure 21.3x53 inches and puts out 27 volts Voc and 6.3 amps nominal. Best to run them between support bars, not over them to avoid cracking the solar cells. Lots more information here. Bolt kits are how we recommend mounting them though magnet kits work well also, holding to 35 knots. |

Unique features of our flexible marine grade panels include the following:
- Quality materials - We use impermeable ETFE laminates that will not cloud of degrade with exposure to intense UV light.
- High Performance when partially shaded: We have blocking diodes throughout the panels to shut off non-producing cells automatically and draw power from producing cells. Our cells are A+ grade cells that continue to produce power even when partially shaded.
- Grade A+ SunPower solar cells - The panels are comparable in performance to our rigid panels. They produce high power at low sun angles and when partially shaded - ideal for cruising sailboats and all marine applications needing maximum output from limited space.
- Mounting flexibility - Flexible panels will contour and flex against curved surfaces with a maximum bending radius of 30 degrees, ideal for mounting on a bimini top or a curved deck surface.
- Mounting options - Each panel can be affixed by high bond tape, snap, magnetic or screw mounting. Our screw mounting system has become the most popular method of attaching solar panels to canvas biminis and dodgers. Grommets are an added bonus for ease-of-installation.
- Plug and play - All panels come with industry standard waterproof MC4 connectors on 3 foot (1 meter) long pigtails.
